Pope Francis Appeal to Putin to put an end to the Ongoing violence in Ukraine
According to Al-Jazeera, Pope Francis has made a direct plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the “spiral of bloodshed and death” in Ukraine.
The Pope spoke on Ukraine on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, and he stated that “rivers of blood and sorrow” keep him up at night.
He pleaded with Russian President Vladimir Putin, “even out of love for his own people, to stop this spiral of violence and death.”
Even Pope Francis has urged President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to consider peace offers in an effort to end the conflict.
He also expressed regret at Russia’s takeover of four Ukrainian areas and warned that it might lead to a nuclear escalation, pleading with Putin to put his own people first.
You may recall that Putin declared the annexation of four partially occupied Ukrainian regions, referring to the people living in those areas as “our citizens forever.” These areas included Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia.
Ukraine and its Western allies have spoken out against the annexation, calling it illegitimate, and the Ukrainian capital has pledged to keep fighting until all captured Ukrainian land is returned.
